After several exchanges, customer service determined that the specific steam generator creating the noise was not a [Mr.Steam](http://www.mrsteam.com/) generator, but because this concern is a common one, it seemed like a good topic to address on this blog. ### **What are normal steam generator noises?** Let’s begin by identifying the normal sounds created by a [steam shower](https://blog.mrsteam.com/archive/bid/313126/Home-Steam-Showers-101) generator. When you first turn on your steam shower, as steam begins to flow through the pipe, you may hear a gurgling noise, as the initial heating of the pipe will cause some condensation. This noise should stop as soon as steam starts to flow out of the steam head. The steam flowing out of the steam head will create a “whooshing” sound. The generator itself will create a muffled boiling or popping sound while the unit is creating steam, but if the steam generator is located in a closet or vanity – anywhere behind a closed door – you will not be able to hear these noises. ### **Recommendations for minimizing steam generator noise issues ** If you are installing a new steam generator for the first time, Mr.Steam has a few recommendations to minimize the risk of problems and malfunctions down the line. Here are a few sounds that indicate trouble along with the likely cause behind each one: - **The Noise**: The steam generator makes a high pitched buzzing sound - **The Cause**: This sound may indicate a problem with either the contactor or transformer - **The Noise**: A loud buzzing noise from the solenoid valve that brings water into the steam generator - **The Cause**: This is an indication that either the water to the generator has been turned off, or that the strainer built into the valve has been clogged - **The Noise**: A loud whistle is heard when the steam generator is on - **The Cause**: This sound means that the steam is traveling through a pipe that is decreasing in size, which would indicate the plumber installed an incorrect steam line, or that the system had become clogged. ### **What to do if your steam generator makes bad noises?** If your Mr.Steam steam shower generator is making a strange noise, your first step should be to [contact Mr.Steam customer service](http://mrsteam.com/page/contact) with the following information: - The model number of your steam generator - The size of the steam shower in cubic feet - The material the walls are made from, such as tile, marble, or stone - Be able to describe the sound – when does it start, and is it happening continuously while the generator is running?  - Where the steam head is placed in the shower  - Shooting a short video with your phone to capture the sound is also helpful Rest assured that your Mr.Steam steambath generator is protected by a limited lifetime warranty.
