Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Design Ideas: Vanities and Cabinets

Written by Hello MrSteam | Wed, Apr 03, 2013

When it's time to remodel a bathroom, making smart design choices about bathroom storage - specifically vanities and cabinets - is just as important as planning for healthy indulgences like a home steam shower.

More specifically, you'll want to select colors and styles that match your decor. Depending on who will be using the bathroom, you'll want to consider how much storage space they will require. For a guest bath, offering cabinet space for towels and spare toiletries is a thoughtful touch, and anyone who uses hair and skin products will appreciate a roomy vanity.

Four Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Design Ideas

Here are a few additional remodeling tips and design ideas for outfitting your bathroom with stylish and functional cabinetry and vanities.

1. A vanity with eye catching details can become a beautiful focal point in the room. Look for legs or feet with dramatic shapes, interesting carvings or molding, even funky drawer pulls can make a piece of furniture really "pop".

2. Think outside the cavernous vanity. Is the traditional vanity with tall, open storage space meeting your needs? It's easier than you think to customize your bathroom storage space. Our friends at Wellborn Cabinets offer helpful Distinctive Storage Solutions that can help you keep your most frequently used items within easy reach. From pull-out hampers to specially shaped drawer inserts, you're sure to find something that will help keep your bathroom cabinets organized.

3. Choose your finish carefully. Dark colors and wood stains can create a striking look, but in small powder rooms, or bathrooms of any size that don't get a great deal of natural light, dark colors can make the room feel cramped and airless. In these settings, lighter, brighter colors are a better choice. And speaking of finishes, if you are going for an antique or shabby chic look, a bit of faux weathering to the paint job is beautifully complementary to these decor styles.

4. Look for sustainably harvested wood cabinets. Wood furniture can be certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council, which means that the raw materials originated from a well managed FSC-certified forest. Sustainable Forest Initiative certification goes a step further and tracks fiber content through production and manufacturing to the end product, while also striving to improve forest practices through conservation grants, community partnerships, logger training, and landowner outreach. Wellborn offers cabinets with both of these certifications in addition to several other green initiatives at their factory.

The Wellborn website also offers a helpful online scrapbook where you can keep your cabinetry wishlist organized and always at your fingertips. Once you've created your scrapbook account, explore Wellborn's over 50 bathroom vanities and cabinet and add your favorites to your scrapbook

Another reason Mr. Steam loves vanities so much is, of course, because they are the perfect place to hide a new steam shower generator!
